Module 1 – How Do I Get a Domain Name?
In order to have a website, the first thing you need is your own domain name. This is simply like “whateveryouwant.com” or “whateveryouwant.net”, .org, .biz (and so forth) that you want to use to label or name your website. Your domain name is how people will find your website on the Internet. So, how do I get a domain name?
Before we show you on how to get a domain name, we have a little note for you on domain name. When choosing a domain name, I would suggest something that is highly relevant to what purpose your website is based on your business and its goals.
For example, if your interest is on “Macbook Air Cases”, your domain name would be: macbookaircases.com
And your website name would be: Macbook Air Case
The other benefits of a domain name are:
1) to build your credibility on the Internet,
2) to support your business and assist in creating a dynamic online presence,
3) to establish your online identity and increase branding, marketing and communication opportunities.
So, are you ready with a domain name? Then watch this video on how to register for one. We will use GoDaddy as an example for this.
There are many domain registrars in the internet. The most popular ones are GoDaddy and NameCheap. Once you have a domain name, you can go to any of these 2 sites to check whether the domain name is available. If available, register the domain name for a period of time you wish during the checkout process.
According to The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the governing body for domain names, requires a valid contact information (registrant, technical, billing, and administrative) for each domain name. If you enter false information, your domain name can be cancelled.
Your contact information is public and accessible through the Whois database at most registrars. However, you can protect your privacy by registering your domain name using a private domain name registration services. It’s up to you as it cost more to hide your contact information.
